Marlins relishing role of spoilers

Being a spoil sport is perfectly fine with the Marlins. It's not the role the club ideally wanted to play, but now that they've been eliminated from playoff contention, the Marlins' intention this weekend is to foil the postseason hopes of the Mets.

Marlins probable pitcher

Chris Volstad

  • #41 RHP
  • (5-4) 3.10 ERA 48 SO
Marlins: Volstad gave up three runs (two earned) in five innings during a loss against the Phillies on Sunday. The outing saw the 21-year-old reach a professional high in innings pitched with 169 1/3. Volstad gave up six hits while striking out three and walking two. Two of the runs came on a rare home run. This season, Volstad has only given up three dingers, and in 91 innings for Double-A Carolina, he didn't allow a single long ball. In his only start against the Mets this season, Volstad gave up only one run in 6 1/3 innings.

Playing the hot hand, Ramon Martinez might get another chance to play on Friday, when the Mets start their final series of the season against the Marlins.

Mets probable pitcher

Mike Pelfrey

  • #34 RHP
  • (13-10) 3.70 ERA 107 SO
Mets: The fact that Mike Pelfrey extended his streak on Sunday to five straight starts without a victory was no fault of his own. Pelfrey allowed only three runs to the Braves over six innings, departing after walking the leadoff man in the seventh. He pitched plenty well enough to win, but another bullpen implosion ensured that Pelfrey would leave with a no-decision. In four starts against the Marlins this season, Pelfrey is 0-3 with a 7.91 ERA -- though his best start against them came earlier this month, when he allowed two runs over 6 2/3 innings.

Perfect storm as rain holds off (83-76) (88-72)

Marlins 6, Mets 1

Leave 'em high, dry

From the get-go, the Marlins paced the game vs. the Mets as the weather cooperated for the night. Hanley Ramirez led off and scored in the two-run first, and Chris Volstad was in command on the mound. Meanwhile, Josh Willingham homered for the fourth straight game.

Cloud hangs over NY

The heavy rain that was forecast in New York held off as the final series at Shea Stadium began, but it was by no means a sunny situation for the Mets. The lineup scratched out one run against Marlins starter Chris Volstad, not nearly enough in its quest to snare a playoff spot.
