Aceves' potential can shine vs. Sox

Though Friday's game against the Red Sox will have no playoff implications for the Yankees, they will get the chance to take one final look this year at starter Alfredo Aceves, who has been quite the pleasant surprise for New York since his promotion to the Major League club on Aug. 28.

  • #91 RHP

Yankees: Aceves looks to keep his budding career moving in the right direction as he makes his fourth big league start and his final one of the campaign. Aceves last faced the Orioles on Sept. 20 and hurled six innings of scoreless five-hit ball, and has allowed three runs in his past 19 innings. The Mexican League product is facing the Red Sox for the first time.

As the Red Sox open Friday's series against the Yankees, the road remains just as difficult as it did the day before. A single loss eliminates them from contention, as does a single win by the Rays at Comerica Park over the next three days.

Red Sox probable pitcher

David Pauley

  • #62 RHP
  • (0-0) 9.31 ERA 9 SO
Red Sox: After a substantial rain delay before Friday's game, manager Terry Francona elected to scratch starter Daisuke Matsuzaka in favor of the rarely-used Pauley. Pauley, a 25-year-old right-hander making his second start of the season, was 14-4 with a 3.55 ERA for Triple-A Pawtucket this season. His lone start at the Major League level came on April 22, a 7-6 loss to the Angels in which he allowed five runs but got a no-decision.

Ransom flexes

Before Cody Ransom went deep twice, Johnny Damon homered to give the Yankees a lead they would keep to help push his former team out of the race for the American League East title. Phil Coke allowed the first run of his young career in a game that withstood a pair of rain delays.

Wild Card for Sox

Not capitalizing on the Rays' loss, the Red Sox were forced to assume the AL Wild Card role with a defeat that was started by David Pauley rather than Daisuke Matsuzaka, who was skipped due to the threat of rain. Catching prospect George Kottaras doubled for his first career hit.
