In the third frame, Mussina was hit on his right elbow by a comebacker to the mound, but managed to stay in the game for two more innings. He will pitch in New York's final game of the season on Sunday in Boston, as he attempts to reach the 20-win plateau for the first time in his 18-year career. Lifetime in Fenway Park, Mussina is 10-8 with a 3.82 ERA.

Daisuke Matsuzaka took the loss in his final start of the regular season, capping an 18-3 campaign with a four-inning tuneup. The Sox were held off the scoreboard until the eighth, when they plated a pair of runs on a Chris Carter groundout and Jacoby Ellsbury's single.
