Rich Harden has never pitched against the Dodgers, but he's looking for payback nonetheless. Harden's Athletics went up 2-0 in the 2003 American League Division Series against Boston. The Red Sox came back to win the next three games and knocked him out of the postseason.

Harden went 5-1 with a 2.34 ERA in 13 starts for Oakland before the Cubs acquired him July 8. In 12 starts with Chicago, he was 5-1 with a 1.77 ERA, and has struck out 89 over 71 innings. Opponents are batting .157 against him. In his last regular-season start against the New York Mets, Harden gave up two earned runs on two hits and five walks over six innings. He has to get the walks under control. Harden's only loss with the Cubs was July 21 at Arizona, when he gave up one run on one hit and two walks over seven innings while striking out 10. The Cubs will take that kind of performance in October.

Hiroki Kuroda, who came to America, he said, "because I wanted to win," can end the Dodgers' 20-year playoff drought on Saturday night, when he starts against the Cubs in Game 3 of the National League Division Series.

He pitched a decade in Japan without a first-place finish and found winning easier in the Major Leagues, reaching the postseason his first season. It was an up-and-down year for Kuroda, who shut out the Cubs on June 6, retiring 16 of the final 17 batters. He also faced the Cubs at Wrigley, allowing only one run in 6 1/3 innings of a tough 1-0 loss. Mindful that Kuroda is not accustomed to pitching every fifth day, the Dodgers worked in extra days off between starts in three of his last four outings. He was particularly sharp in his fine tune-up Sunday in San Francisco and he was 6-2 at home.

Chicago should be plenty proud of what it accomplished this season, even though it didn't advance to the next round of the playoffs. However, the sting of not being able to end the club's 100-year drought still hurts, as the Cubs fell to the Dodgers in a three-game sweep in the NLDS.

By beating the Cubs, who owned the best record in the NL this year, in three games in the NLDS, the Dodgers completed their first postseason sweep since 1963. L.A. advanced to the NLCS behind the right arm of winning pitcher Hiroki Kuroda and James Loney's two-run double in the first.
