Coming off a stellar outing in his first career postseason start in the National League Division Series, Game 4 starter Joe Blanton has bullied his way into a position of prominence, giving manager Charlie Manuel the luxury of using his pitching staff conservatively in the NL Championship Series.

Phillies: Blanton delivered against the Brewers in Game 4 of the NLDS, his biggest start since being traded to Philly from Oakland in mid-July. The right-hander earned the win in the Phils' series-clinching victory over Milwaukee, holding the Brewers to one run on five hits in six innings. Despite struggling with his control at times during the past two months, Blanton did not walk a Brewers batter. Blanton has started twice against the Dodgers this season and earned a no-decision each time, allowing a total of five earned runs in 11 innings for a 4.09 ERA.

The Dodgers' decision to tab Derek Lowe as Monday's Game 4 starter of the NL Championship Series on three days' rest was no rash reaction to Los Angeles dropping its first two games in Philadelphia.

Dodgers: By pitching Lowe on three days' rest in Game 4, Dodgers manager Joe Torre has set up his rotation so that if the NLCS goes the distance, his top three starters will go on full rest. He said that sinkerballer Lowe would be able to better handle the rigors of going on short rest. Lowe is 2-1 with a 5.09 ERA in 23 innings over four starts on three days' rest, but also pitched a gem under those conditions to defeat Torre's Yankees in Game 7 of the 2004 ALCS.

Stairs master (3-1) (1-3)
Phillies 7, Dodgers 5
Down by two in the eighth, the Phillies made a thrilling comeback to take Game 4 from the Dodgers. Two batters after Shane Victorino hit a game-tying two-run homer, Matt Stairs slammed a mammoth two-run, pinch-hit homer to move Philly within one win of its first World Series appearance since 1993.

Dodgers fans experienced the highest of highs and the lowest of lows in Game 4. L.A. appeared to be on its way toward evening its series with Philly after taking the lead in the sixth, but the bullpen suffered a rare meltdown in the eighth, allowing a pair of two-run homers to put the Dodgers at a 3-1 deficit in the NLCS.
