Perhaps this was what Charlie Manuel had in mind when he decided not to use his top starter, Cole Hamels, three times in the NLCS. The Phillies manager might just have envisioned Hamels on the mound at Dodger Stadium, with an opportunity to send his team to the World Series.

Hamels has lived up to his status as the Phillies' ace so far this postseason, shutting down the Brewers to open the National League Championship Series and then doing the same to the Dodgers in the NLCS opener. In Game 5, the 24-year-old finds himself on yet another big stage, this time with the chance to send his team to its first World Series since 1993. Including the postseason, Wednesday's start will be his fourth against the Dodgers this year. Hamels has pitched well against Los Angeles, posting a 2-0 record and allowing only six earned runs in 21 innings.

Chad Billingsley, the blossoming ace who went 12-3 the last 3 1/2 months of the season and yielded just one run on five hits in 6 2/3 innings in an NLDS start, looked nothing like himself in a disastrous Game 2 NLCS outing. The Dodgers hope he'll return to form and help them stave off elimination.

Whether the Dodgers' season will extend past Wednesday depends very heavily on which Chad Billingsley shows up. If it's the Billingsley that ranked seventh in the league with a 3.14 ERA and won Game 2 of the NLDS against the Cubs, Los Angeles has a strong chance. But if it's the Billingsley that lasted just 2 1/3 innings in his last start against the Phillies, winter will likely arrive in a hurry. Working in Billingsley's favor is a 1.65 ERA in his last eight starts at Dodger Stadium.

Phall Classic! (4-1) (1-4)
Phillies 5, Dodgers 1
For the sixth time in franchise history and the first since '93, the Phillies are back in the World Series, beating the Dodgers in five games in the NLCS. And the series clincher was a collaborative effort -- led by ace left-hander Cole Hamels, who was named the MVP of the NLCS.

The Dodgers proved all the naysayers wrong by making it this far, but their journey ended in the NLCS after they couldn't stave off elimination vs. the Phillies in Game 5. Manny Ramirez produced L.A.'s lone run with a solo homer in the sixth, the 28th of his playoff career.
