Lannan steps into the spotlight

Ed Lannan said recently that he and at least 10 of his relatives will go to Miami to watch his son, Nationals left-hander John Lannan, pitch on Monday afternoon against the Marlins.

Manager Manny Acta says he picked Lannan to start the opener against the Marlins because he had 21 quality starts last year.

An 11th-round pick in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft, Lannan had a rapid rise to the big leagues. Two years after being drafted, Lannan went from Class A Potomac to the Majors in one season and had a respectable 4.15 ERA in six big-league games. By early last season, Lannan was the team's No. 1 starter.

Lannan will face a tough Marlins lineup that includes shortstop Hanley Ramirez and second baseman Dan Uggla. It will be the first time Lannan will face Florida during his career. The Marlins were 14-3 against the Nationals last season. Lannan hopes he pitches like last season and puts his start on Wednesday afternoon against the Blue Jays behind him. He gave up seven runs in 4 2/3 innings in a 7-6 loss. Lannan said it was best to get the bad start out of the way before he faces the Marlins.

Nolasco ready to roll on Opening Day

In terms of elite National League right-handed pitchers, Ricky Nolasco isn't as well recognized as say Brandon Webb, Jake Peavy or Roy Oswalt. But that could change if the Marlins' 26-year-old repeats what he did a year ago.

Last year mattered when determining Florida's Opening Day starter. After establishing himself as one of the top right-handers in the National League in '08, Nolasco was rewarded with his first Opening Day start of his young career.

Nolasco comes off a 15-8 season with a 3.52 ERA. The 26-year-old logged a team high 212 1/3 innings over 34 games with 32 starts. Because he was so valuable and so effective as the season wore on, he entered Spring Training with the inside edge to assume the role of ace.

Also impressive about Nolasco's 2008 season was the fact he struck out 186 while walking just 42. He has a goal of walking fewer than 25 this season. For his career, Nolasco is 5-1 with a 3.53 ERA lifetime vs. Washington, including 2-0 (2.08 ERA) last year.

Dunn flexes in Florida

Adam Dunn came as advertised, slugging a three-run homer against the Marlins in his Nationals debut on Opening Day. Despite the impressive display of power, Washington simply had too big a hole to dig out of after starter John Lannan struggled in his three-inning outing.

Leading off with win

The Marlins watched leadoff man Emilio Bonifacio do it all on Opening Day, from stealing three bases to racing around the diamond for an inside-the-park homer. Bonifacio's contributions, paired with a grand slam from Hanley Ramirez -- the first of his career -- paved the way for victory.
