Shairon Martis

Martis beat out right-hander Jordan Zimmermann for the fourth spot in the rotation. Martis said he probably would have been in the Minor Leagues had he decided to play in the World Baseball Classic. Before he arrived in camp, Martis chose not to play for The Netherlands, because he felt he had a 50-50 chance to be the Nationals' fifth starter.

Braves don't let Nats rain on parade (0-4) (3-1)

Braves 6, Nationals 5 (10)

Rallies fall short

After a fourth-inning rain delay knocked out both starters, Adam Dunn's RBI single capped off a three-run sixth to tie the game. After the Braves went ahead again, Lastings Milledge's bases-loaded single tied it in the ninth, but the Nats couldn't get another and lost in the 10th.

Extra effort

On Opening Day at Turner Field, the Braves went ahead in the third on Yunel Escobar's homer, but after a two-hour, two-minute rain delay, the bullpen gave up leads in the sixth and the ninth. Kelly Johnson's 10th-inning RBI single allowed Atlanta to walk away with a win.
