A well-rested Shawn Hill takes the mound on Saturday at Citizens Bank Park against the Phillies in the second game of a four-game series. Hill, the Padres' No. 5 starter, hasn't pitched since earning his first victory as a Padre on April 10 against the Giants at PETCO Park.

Hill, released by the Nationals in March, has found a home in San Diego and, after his first start for his new team, might just stick in the rotation for a while. Aside from running into a rough path in the sixth inning during his start on April 10 against the Giants, Hill pitched well in his Padres debut. In five innings, Hill allowed seven hits, four in this last inning. Reliever Luke Gregerson bailed him out, getting a double-play ball to minimize the damage. All told, Hill allowed two runs in five-plus innings with one walk and three strikeouts in a 69-pitch effort. He's still getting stretched out but will likely be able to work in upwards of 80-plus pitches in this start against the Phillies.

The home runs Brett Myers has allowed have him shaking his head, because he believes a few mistakes have cost him a lot of runs. He hopes to turn the corner Saturday night against the Padres at Citizens Bank Park.

Myers pitched pretty well Saturday against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field. He gave up just four hits in seven innings. The only problem is that three of those hits were home runs. Myers has allowed just 12 hits in his first two starts in 2009, and six of them have been home runs. Myers acknowledges he has made some mistakes in those two starts. He just hasn't been lucky enough to have his opponents miss them. Myers is hoping to reduce his mistakes against the Padres.

Padres power past Phils (9-3) (4-6)

Padres 8, Phillies 5

Kouz man of hour

The Padres and Phillies engaged in a battle on Saturday evening that was the very definition of see-saw. Neither team, it seemed, could hold onto a lead. In fact, each squad held the lead by one run at the end of its respective half of the eighth inning. But Kevin Kouzmanoff's three-run shot in the ninth sealed it.

Lidge human after all

Entering Saturday evening, Brad Lidge had never blown a save in a Phillies uniform, compiling a save streak that extended back to 2007. On Saturday, though, Brian Giles ended that 47-save string with an RBI groundout that plated Jody Gerut in the ninth, and Kevin Kouzmanoff's three-run homer put the Padres up for good.
