Lohse takes hot start to national stage

Coming off a three-hit shutout, Kyle Lohse takes a 2-0 record and 1.13 ERA into Saturday's matinee as the Cards try to gain the series' upper hand against the Cubs on FOX.

Cardinals probable pitcher

Kyle Lohse

  • #26 RHP
  • (2-0) 1.13 ERA 8 SO
Lohse has been exceptional thus far, but he's worked hard. In each of his first two starts, he's stuck it out to get some extra outs when, ideally, he might have benefited from being relieved. Still, each time, he's been able to grind it out and get the job done. He's likely to benefit from the extra day of rest that he'll receive following a little bit of rotation shuffling in the wake of Chris Carpenter's injury.

Soto hopes to break out in spotlight

After a slow start, Geovany Soto drove in his first run during Friday's thrilling win, and he'll be one to watch as the Cubs try to take the lead in their four-game series with the Cardinals on FOX.

Cubs probable pitcher

Ryan Dempster

  • #46 RHP
  • (1-0) 4.50 ERA 11 SO
Dempster got a little help from Reed Johnson to pick up the win in his last start. Johnson robbed Prince Fielder of a potential grand slam in the fifth. For the game, Dempster gave up four runs on six hits and three walks over six innings while striking out six. He said he didn't feel sharp and kept getting behind hitters. Dempster will be happy to be home. The right-hander was 14-3 last year at Wrigley.

Reyes takes loss

Ryan Ludwick notched his 14th and 15th RBIs of the young season and the Cardinals' bullpen was impressive as St. Louis fought into extra innings. But in the 11th inning, Dennys Reyes surrendered a two-run walk-off homer. Kyle Lohse started and gave up four runs in five innings.

Cubs walk off

With two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning, Aramis Ramirez slugged a two-run homer to give the Cubs a victory. The walk-off blast capped a battle of bullpens that saw Aaron Heilman and Kevin Gregg combine for three scoreless frames. Ryan Theriot contributed three hits.
