Reds' running game has taken a hiatus

Expected to be aggressive on the basepaths, the Reds have just six steals through their first 13 games. Manager Dusty Baker, however, thinks the threat of stolen bases has helped the team.

Reds probable pitcher

Johnny Cueto

  • #47 RHP
  • (0-1) 4.22 ERA 12 SO
In his last start, Cueto held the Astros hitless for the first three frames but lasted just 4 2/3 innings, allowing two hits in a no-decision as the Reds won, 2-1. It was the six walks the right-hander issued -- particularly the three he allowed in the fifth inning -- that put Cueto out of the game early. Last season against the Cubs, Cueto was 1-3 with a 4.68 ERA in four games. He allowed 26 hits in 25 innings.

Cubs shrugging off cold weather

April in Chicago is rarely kind to warm-weather seekers, but the Cubs can't concern themselves with the conditions as they continue their series against the Reds behind Ted Lilly.

Cubs probable pitcher

Ted Lilly

  • #30 LHP
  • (2-0) 3.86 ERA 11 SO
The lefty ignored nasty weather in the Cubs' home opener and held the Rockies to one hit over 6 2/3 innings en route to a win. He struck out eight. This is the first time Lilly's opened the season 2-0 since 2003. He was scheduled to start Sunday night vs. the Cardinals but the game was postponed by rain. Lilly was roughed up by the Reds last year, going 0-4 with an 8.15 ERA against them. He's looking for payback.

Cueto quiets Cubs

A third-inning unearned run, which came home on a Willy Taveras sac fly, was plenty for Reds starter Johnny Cueto, who stifled the Cubs at a windy Wrigley Field. The young righty yielded just four hits over seven scoreless frames for his first win of the season.

Tough-luck loss

Ted Lilly was up to the task of keeping the Cubs close despite a dominant performance from Reds starter Johnny Cueto, but the bats never broke through -- collecting just six hits. Lilly's lone mistake, an error in the third inning, led to the decisive run.
