Chi Cubs (9-9) at Arizona (8-11)

TV: WGN | Radio: WGN 720 9:40 pm ET Chase Field TV: FS-A | Radio: KTAR 620, KSUN 1400
Since April 4, 2005, Carlos Zambrano has made 133 regular-season pitching appearances. But none of them have come against the D-backs, a streak that ends on Tuesday.

Cubs probable pitcher

Carlos Zambrano

  • #38 RHP
  • (1-1) 4.85 ERA 27 SO
Zambrano took the loss in his last start against the Reds and Aaron Harang. Big Z gave up four runs on seven hits over seven innings while striking out seven. He didn't get much help from his defense -- or himself -- as the Cubs misplayed a couple of balls and Zambrano made a throwing error on a pickoff and the runner eventually scored. Zambrano is 1-2 with a 4.88 ERA in four career starts against Arizona.

D-backs try to end feast-or-famine ways

If you're looking for the reason the D-backs rank next to last in the National League in runs scored, it is not for a lack of home runs.

Diamondbacks probable pitcher

Yusmeiro Petit

  • #48 RHP
  • (0-1) 6.00 ERA 11 SO
Petit has taken Brandon Webb's place in the rotation while the right-hander recovers from shoulder stiffness. In two starts, Petit has allowed five earned runs in 10 innings. Unfortunately the bullpen has struggled both times he has pitched -- in his first outing against the Dodgers, which resulted in an 11-2 loss, and his last time out against the Rockies, which turned into a 9-6 Arizona loss. Petit has filled the spot-starter/long-relief role for the D-backs the past two seasons. Though he doesn't possess overpowering stuff, he has a good feel for pitching and generally has good command.

Big Z brushes history (10-9) (8-12)

Ace flirts with cycle

Carlos Zambrano turned in seven solid innings on the mound and was a triple shy of becoming the first pitcher in history to hit for the cycle. Alfonso Soriano, who had four RBIs, and Mike Fontenot each homered for the second straight night.

D-backs get outdone

Stymied by Cubs righty Carlos Zambrano, the D-backs couldn't overcome a rough outing by Yusmeiro Petit, who allowed a season-high seven runs on eight hits and didn't survive the fourth inning. Chris Young picked up his seventh RBI with a double.
