Cubs are slowly getting healthy

The hobbled Cubs should get another injured star back in the lineup on Wednesday when they close out the series against the D-backs.

Cubs probable pitcher

Ryan Dempster

  • #46 RHP
  • (1-0) 4.88 ERA 21 SO
Dempster kept the Cubs in the game in his last start but didn't get much help. Facing the Cardinals, he gave up three runs on seven hits and one walk over six innings. Dempster struck out six in his second straight no-decision and third in four starts. Dempster said he felt good, but got into jams. He did not get a decision in his only start against the D-backs last year, giving up two earned runs in six innings.

D-backs getting aggressive on the bases

The D-backs' five stolen bases on Monday aren't necessarily a sign of things to come, but they demonstrate the team speed they possess.

Diamondbacks probable pitcher

Doug Davis

  • #49 LHP
  • (1-3) 3.67 ERA 20 SO
Any pitcher besides the reigning NL Cy Young Award winner would be a welcomed sight for Davis. The left-hander faced Giants ace Tim Lincecum in his last two starts, pitching eight innings in his first outing against San Francisco and six innings in the second. Davis struggled with his curveball in his last outing against the Giants and was charged with nine hits and five earned runs in the loss. He should be feeling confident at the plate after picking up an RBI against Lincecum.

Double D gets it done (10-10) (9-12)

Diamondbacks 10, Cubs 0

Erratic bats hit a lull

With a rough road trip in the books, the Cubs scored seven runs in four losses and 21 runs in two wins. Wednesday afternoon's finale with the D-backs was one of the former, with right-hander Ryan Dempster receiving no run support and taking his first loss of the season.

Davis tosses a gem

Doug Davis entranced the Cubs with two hits allowed over seven scoreless frames to earn his second victory of the season, and Chad Tracy hit a two-run ground-rule double in the first and a solo homer in the third to lead the offense as the D-backs picked up a series win.
