Volstad a big fan of Wrigley Field

Chris Volstad's third career appearance came at Wrigley Field last season, and the young right-hander is excited to return to the historic ballpark.

Marlins probable pitcher

Chris Volstad

  • #41 RHP
  • (2-0) 2.70 ERA 22 SO
Volstad got the no-decision against the Phillies on Saturday after yielding three runs on four hits through seven innings. The 22-year-old right-hander gave up two solo home runs -- to opposing pitcher Chan Ho Park and Ryan Howard -- and ended up walking one while striking out six. In the sixth, Volstad had the bases loaded with nobody out, but he got out of it with just one run across when he got Ryan Howard to ground into a double play and forced Jayson Werth into a groundout to shortstop. On Thursday, he'll face a Cubs team he gave up four runs to through 12 innings in two no-decisions last year.

Ramirez may be heading to the DL

The Cubs are coming off a 2-4 road trip that left them .500 on the season, but, given the recent rash of injuries, .500 may be a blessing.

Cubs probable pitcher

Sean Marshall

  • #45 LHP
  • (0-1) 4.50 ERA 9 SO
The lefty posted a quality start in his last outing against the Cardinals, but didn't get any offensive support. Marshall held the Redbirds to three runs on six hits and one walk over six innings, striking out five. He did his part, reaching on an error in the fifth which led to the Cubs' first run. He's 1-3 with a 4.38 ERA in his career against the Marlins.

Marlins have Cantu attitude (14-8) (10-11)

Marlins 8, Cubs 2 (10)

Comeback kids

Chris Volstad retired first 10 batters he faced, but stumbled in the fifth as back-to-back jacks spoiled his fine effort. But the game wasn't over by a long shot, as the Marlins tied it in the eighth and sent it to extras, where Jorge Cantu sealed the deal with a bases-clearing double.

Extra disappointing

Sean Marshall didn't wilt under the heat of an early duel, but his quest for his first victory of the season was derailed by a Marlins' rally after the southpaw exited and the Cubs squandered the lead. In extras, reliever Aaron Heilman allowed six runs (five earned) to score.
