Crew cautious in use of Hoffman

Asked Tuesday if he would be available to pitch a third straight day for the first time this season, Trevor Hoffman was vague at best. The Brewers opted not to use him, so Hoffman will be available to face the Reds.

Brewers probable pitcher

Manny Parra

  • #26 LHP
  • (0-4) 5.33 ERA 23 SO
Parra remained winless in his fifth start Friday against the D-backs, but at least he didn't suffer the loss. The lefty, who had lost each of his first four starts, shut out Arizona hitters on just 63 pitches through the first five innings before running into trouble in a 30-pitch sixth. He was burned by a pair of two-out walks, including a pass to Conor Jackson that forced in the first run of the game. It was intriguing that Parra walked Jackson on a full-count changeup, a pitch that manager Ken Macha has urged -- strongly -- that Parra use more often. Parra missed the Pirates when they came through Milwaukee, but he did beat them last season, allowing four hits and no runs in 5 2/3 innings on May 20.

Arroyo enjoying time in Reds' rotation

Bronson Arroyo is not one of those pitchers who likes to fly ahead of his teammates on days before he pitches in another city. The right-hander said he prefers to stay with his teammates.

Reds probable pitcher

Bronson Arroyo

  • #61 RHP
  • (4-1) 4.91 ERA 18 SO
Arroyo stymied the Pirates for eight scoreless innings and a 4-0 Reds win on Friday night while giving up four hits, three walks and striking out four. He relied heavily on his fastball and established it early, but used his breaking stuff as the out pitch. A pair of double plays on the ground also helped him stay out of serious trouble. Arroyo has worked exclusively with backup catcher Ryan Hanigan to this point and it's been especially to the right-hander's liking.

Brewers flex muscles, show Braun (16-12) (14-13)

Brewers 15, Reds 3

Braun-y blowout

After a rain delay, the Brewers didn't waste any time before showing some muscle. J.J. Hardy smacked a three-run homer in the first inning, and Ryan Braun hit a grand slam in the second that knocked Bronson Arroyo out of the game. Manny Parra earned the win with a solid start.

Arroyo rocked

Bronson Arroyo was off from the start, walking two batters and giving up a three-run homer in the first. He left after giving up a grand slam in the second. Daniel Herrera pitched well in relief, and Brandon Phillips and Jay Bruce homered, but the deficit was too great.
