Rookie catcher Francisco Cervelli has impressed onlookers with his enthusiastic defensive work, making him a strong option to help the injury-ravaged Yankees.

Yankees probable pitcher

Phil Hughes

  • #65 RHP
  • (1-1) 2.70 ERA 8 SO
Hughes looks to rebound from a tough second outing when he faces the Orioles on Saturday. After appearing sharp in his season debut on April 28 at Detroit, Hughes struggled with command and consistency on May 4 vs. the Red Sox, coming out after a two-hour, 17-minute rain delay and allowing four runs (three earned) in four innings. He walked four and struck out two, giving up a home run to Mike Lowell.

Eaton set to take stage for Orioles

The O's are working through a bizarre streak that has seen their starting pitchers earn victory just two times since April 14. With Adam Eaton on the mound Saturday, they hope that will change.

Orioles probable pitcher

Adam Eaton

  • #24 RHP
  • (1-3) 7.18 ERA 23 SO
Eaton has allowed at least four earned runs in all but one of his starts this season, and he's gone deeper than five innings just two times in five outings. The veteran has rung up high pitch counts in virtually all of his starts, but he pitched well enough to keep the Orioles in the game against Tampa Bay. Now, he'll have to repeat the feat against New York, one of the most patient teams in the league.

Huff and puff and blowout in win (14-16) (13-18)

Orioles 12, Yankees 5

Second thoughts

The combination of sloppy defense and Phil Hughes' ineffectiveness made for a regretful second inning, with the righty being chased before he could escape the frame. Back-to-back homers by Johnny Damon and Mark Teixeira lessened the sting on a forgettable night for the Yanks.

Eight is enough

So what if Adam Eaton worked up a high pitch count with five walks? The Orioles gave the righty plenty of support, jumping on opposing starter Phil Hughes with an eight-run second highlighted by Aubrey Huff's three-run dinger. For good measure, Baltimore added three more homers.
