Khalil sees winning vibe for Cardinals

Khalil Greene won two NL West division crowns with the Padres, and the shortstop thinks the Cards have the right attitude to go all the way this season.

Cardinals probable pitcher

Adam Wainwright

  • #50 RHP
  • (3-1) 4.08 ERA 30 SO
Wainwright's pattern of putting runners on base finally caught up to him in his last start, when he was knocked around for seven runs by the Phillies. He insists that he'll use the defeat as something of a wake-up call and get things sorted out quickly. Still, he's only really pitched up to his high standards once in six starts this season.

Votto nearing return from flu

After going without one of their best hitters for three games, the Reds are looking forward to the return of Joey Votto, who could be back in the lineup as early as Sunday.

Reds probable pitcher

Edinson Volquez

  • #36 RHP
  • (4-2) 3.47 ERA 35 SO
Volquez has discovered that he can do more with less. Less speed, that is. The right-hander can reach 97 mph on the radar gun, but he often doesn't know where the ball is going. Manager Dusty Baker is convinced Volquez can achieve more with a 91-92 mph fastball that still moves and he can locate and save the most intense heat for selected situations. Volquez has been arguably the most difficult Major Leaguer for hitters to solve over his past three starts. He's allowed just five hits in his past 21 innings and no runs in his past two starts, covering 16 innings. His most recent effort resulted in a 7-0 victory over the Marlins on Tuesday. He struck out seven and yielded three hits. Of his 97 pitches, 60 went for strikes.

Rasmus' clutch day

The Cardinals made their mothers proud on their special day, as Colby Rasmus capped an offensive matinee with a game-winning RBI double in extra innings. Albert Pujols put a ball well over the fence for his National League-leading 12th blast in the fifth, and Chris Duncan made it a day to remember with three RBIs.

Sweep dashed

Pink bats in hand, the Reds were chasing their first series sweep entering Sunday. It was not to be, though, despite five homers and an exciting come-from-behind rally to force extras. Adam Rosales drilled his first homer, and Micah Owings -- normally the Reds' fifth starter -- ripped a game-tying blast in the ninth.
