Peavy has put trade talks behind him

Rumored to be heading to the Cubs over the offseason, Jake Peavy has put those whispers behind him as he prepares to start for the Padres at Wrigley Field.

Padres probable pitcher

Jake Peavy

  • #44 RHP
  • (2-4) 4.27 ERA 52 SO
Peavy made one mistake in his last start and it cost him dearly. The right-hander struck out nine batters through five innings, struck out the first batter he faced in the sixth inning, walked a batter and then allowed a two-run home run to Justin Upton. Otherwise, Peavy was sharp, striking out a season-high 12 batters over seven innings and getting a lot of mileage out of his mid-90s fastball that he was able to spot on the outside corner at times as well as his slider. Peavy allowed four hits and had two walks. This coming on the heels of eight shutout innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers in his previous start. That's two starts, two runs, 15 innings and one loss and one no-decision.

Cubs add Ascanio to arsenal for Padres

With the loss of Chad Fox to an inflammation in his right elbow, the Cubs were in need of another arm. Jose Ascanio, called up from Triple-A Iowa, could well see action when the Cubs host the Padres on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. CT.

Cubs probable pitcher

Rich Harden

  • #40 RHP
  • (3-1) 4.83 ERA 41 SO
Harden pitched seven strong innings in his last start Wednesday at Houston before giving up three hits, including a two-run homer to Lance Berkman, in the eighth. He gave up three runs and eight hits and threw 99 pitches. He struck out four and walked three. It was his longest outing of the season. He had lasted six innings in three of his previous four starts. Harden, who spent the first 5 1/2 years of his career in the Majors with Oakland, has never faced San Diego.

Comeback Cubs fry Friars (13-20) (18-14)

Cubs 6, Padres 2

Padres hot, then cold

Adrian Gonzalez started the Padres off nicely with a two-run homer in the first inning, his 11th, and Jake Peavy kept the Cubs quiet through four. But despite fanning nine, Peavy found trouble in the sixth, and the offense was unable to muster anything further in defeat.

A little history in win

Milton Bradley belted a go-ahead two-run home run and Bobby Scales, playing in his first Major League season after spending 10-plus seasons in the Minors, hit his first career homer as the Cubs won the opener. Rich Harden was solid through six, and won his fourth straight decision.
