Young out to make short work of Cubs

At 6-foot-10, Chris Young towers over most other players in the Major Leagues, especially other starting pitchers. He'll take on 6-foot-1 Ted Lilly and the Cubs at Wrigley Field tonight.

Padres probable pitcher

Chris Young

  • #32 RHP
  • (2-1) 4.76 ERA 31 SO
Young wasn't quite as good as he was in his previous start against the Dodgers on May 2, when he allowed one run in seven innings, but he did pitch well against Arizona on May 7, as he allowed two runs on five hits over six innings. Young had some control issues, walking four, but he also had six strikeouts. He threw 98 pitches in six innings but was lifted for a pinch-hitter with the go-ahead run on base in the seventh inning against the Diamondbacks. Young will make only his second start at Minute Maid Park, where he is 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA.

Freel shares load as sub for Ramirez

Ryan Freel's career single-season home run high is eight. He's never driven in 30 runs in a season. In six years in Cincinnati, he totaled 114 RBIs. But Freel and Mike Fontenot are being asked to fill in the huge gap created by Aramis Ramirez's injury.

Cubs probable pitcher

Ted Lilly

  • #30 LHP
  • (4-2) 3.11 ERA 31 SO
After pitching poorly in his first two road games of the season, Lilly threw well last Thursday at Houston to beat the Astros. He lasted six innings, giving up four hits and two runs, striking out five and walking three. He surrendered a two-run homer to Miguel Tejada in the first, but allowed only one hit over the next five innings. Lilly is 4-1 lifetime with a 2.84 ERA in six games against San Diego.

Cubs bring thunder to rainy Wrigley (13-21) (19-14)

Cubs 6, Padres 4 (8)

Comeback dampened

Adrian Gonzalez homered in his third straight game, this time going deep twice to give him 13. But Chris Young served up a career-high four homers over four innings, and a late rally fell short in a game delayed by 37 minutes before first pitch and ultimately called in the eighth.

Series at a Glance

Starts with Soriano

Alfonso Soriano got the slugging started with his 53rd career leadoff shot, equaling Craig Biggio for second all-time. Emerging power threat Ryan Theriot followed immediately with his fourth of the season and added his fifth, while Geovany Soto finally notched his first dinger.
