Gaudin only looking for win vs. Cubs

Chad Gaudin says he plans to pitch the Cubs like they were any other team, ignoring that they released him near the end of Spring Training. "I'm not taking anything into it with aggression or any kind of hard feelings, or like I need to pitch with a vendetta," said Gaudin.

One of these days, Gaudin will actually get to see the mound at pitcher-friendly PETCO Park. Until then, the right-hander will keep pitching on the road as he has in each of his first three starts for the Padres. Gaudin's start Thursday will be his fourth for the Padres, all coming away from San Diego. He is coming off a start where he allowed two runs over seven innings against the Astros at Minute Made Park. Gaudin was able to dial up his fastball to 94 mph at times and showed considerable late movement on his slider, a pitch the Astros had trouble with. Gaudin walked three batters, the third time he's walked at least three. But overall, his command was good.

Dempster out to reclaim winning feeling

A year ago, Ryan Dempster was 14-3 at Wrigley Field. So far, Dempster is unbeaten at home, but not exactly on the same roll as he was last season. Dempster will try to get back on track when he closes the Cubs' three-game series against the San Diego Padres on Thursday.

Dempster was dealing with a small strike zone Saturday in Milwaukee, but he would have escaped with a quality start had he not gone out for a seventh inning. The right-hander threw 111 pitches through six innings, then retired the first man in the seventh before allowing back-to-back home runs -- one of them to light-hitting infielder Craig Counsell. That made for a jagged final line that included three walks and four earned runs, though he did finish with nine strikeouts. Dempster hasn't lasted fewer than six innings in any of his seven starts.

Walking on sunshine (13-22) (20-14)

Cubs 11, Padres 3

The soloist

How much more can one man do? Adrian Gonzalez crushed yet another home run -- a solo shot, his 14th of the season -- to aid the Padres' cause, but his team was left in the dust, unable to muster much against Cubs starter Ryan Dempster.

Double the fun

Fueled by a pair of big innings, the Cubs handily swept the Padres right out of Wrigley Field, using 10 free passes to help their cause. Starter Ryan Dempster benefited from the outpouring to notch the win in the matinee series finale.
