Every start a new lesson for Wells

Randy Wells will make his second big league start Friday when the Cubs open a three-game series against the Astros, and he's pumped to use what he learned in the first one.

Cubs probable pitcher

Randy Wells

  • #36 RHP
  • (0-0) 0.00 ERA 5 SO
Wells acquitted himself admirably in his first Major League start Friday, pitching five shutout innings and extending his scoreless-innings streak to 10 1/3 to start his career. Wells wasn't terribly efficient, however, tossing 19 pitches in the first inning, 23 in the third and stranding two runners in each of the first three frames. Still, he settled and faced the minimum in the final two frames before the Cubs' bullpen took over and surrendered a late home run that cost Wells his first Major League win. The 26-year-old should get another shot with Carlos Zambrano still on the disabled list.
