Kendry Morales' hot hitting is making it easy for the Angels to forget departed slugger Mark Teixeira.

Angels probable pitcher

Matt Palmer

  • #32 RHP
  • (4-0) 3.38 ERA 16 SO
Palmer, the 30-year-old journeyman, continues to flourish with his poise and command, showing both traits in a remarkable effort against the Red Sox on Wednesday night in Anaheim. Down 4-0 after two innings, Palmer went on a run of 20 consecutive outs, finishing with eight strikeouts against two walks, both costing him runs. After going 0-2 in three starts for the Giants last year, the first Major League opportunities of his career, Palmer made an adjustment in his delivery at Triple-A Salt Lake in early April, more leg drive combined with a direct path to the plate, and it has paid dividends in his new home.

Aardsma takes reins as closer

The closing job that Mariners right-hander David Aardsma wanted all along has landed in his lap, but how long it lasts is anyone's guess.

Mariners probable pitcher

Felix Hernandez

  • #34 RHP
  • (4-2) 3.53 ERA 53 SO
Hernandez turned back the clock to April in his last start, holding the Rangers to four hits and no runs in a stellar performance in Arlington. The staff ace had struggled in his first two May starts, surrendering 16 hits and 12 earned runs in 10 innings, after ending April with a 4-0 record. He had a dazzling two-seamer and location in his start against the Rangers.

No gem, no problem for Halos (20-18) (18-22)

Angels 6, Mariners 5

Angels excel up top

Matt Palmer wasn't at his best, allowing five runs in five innings, but the Angels' bats, specifically those at the top of the order, got the righty's back. Chone Figgins, Maicer Izturis, Bobby Abreu and Torii Hunter, filling holes one through four, combined for 10 hits, three RBIs and five runs scored.

Felix's skid continues

Ken Griffey Jr. hit career home run No. 615, Ronny Cedeno added his second homer of the season and Ichiro Suzuki extended his hitting streak to 13 games with an RBI double, but the offense couldn't pick up Felix Hernandez, who allowed six runs in 5 2/3 innings and remained winless in the month of May.
