Scales, Bradley in key roles vs. Cards

Since the Cubs are facing right-handed pitchers on this trip, including Thursday's finale in St. Louis against Adam Wainwright, switch-hitters Bobby Scales and Milton Bradley have been taking more left-handed swings than right.

Cubs probable pitcher

Sean Marshall

  • #45 LHP
  • (2-2) 4.02 ERA 20 SO
Marshall was assigned to the bullpen over the weekend just in case another lefty was needed. He missed a turn in the rotation when last Friday's game against the Astros was rained out. This will be his sixth start of the year. In his last start May 10, he gave up two runs on five hits over five innings against the Brewers. He has thrown six or more innings in three of his five starts.

Adam Wainwright was saddled with a loss in his last start, despite allowing one run on two hits over eight innings. He hopes to have better fortune as he tries to help the Cards sweep the Cubs at Busch Stadium.

Cardinals probable pitcher

Adam Wainwright

  • #50 RHP
  • (3-2) 3.83 ERA 40 SO
It appears that Wainwright is back. Despite taking a loss, he was brilliant in his last start, throwing eight innings of two-hit, one-run ball. He threw strikes, but more than that, he threw quality strikes. Wainwright believes he has fixed a delivery flaw that had his arm slot too high. He's also back to relying more heavily on his sinking fastball. The combination added up to an excellent game on Saturday, and it should continue to do so as he goes forward.

Centrally focused: Cards sweep showdown (21-18) (24-17)

Cardinals 3, Cubs 1

Offense sputters

Sean Marshall pitched five solid frames, keeping the game close throughout his time on the hill. But the game followed the same series pattern, with the Cubs' offense coming up empty in the clutch against the Cards. In the end, Kosuke Fukudome's RBI single was the only tally Chicago managed in the finale.

Series at a Glance

Trifecta complete

On the heels of two stellar Cardinals starts in the first two games of the series, Adam Wainwright was no less magnificent, twirling 8 2/3 solid innings en route to helping sweep away the Cubs. He received support in a big way, with Albert Pujols homering and Brian Barden adding a blast to cap the win.
