Relief corps coming through for Braves

Winning one-run games, a major problem for Atlanta last season, has become a strength for the club of late. On their 10-game homestand that concluded Sunday, three of the Braves' six wins were decided by one run.

Braves probable pitcher

Javier Vazquez

  • #33 RHP
  • (4-3) 3.39 ERA 73 SO
Vazquez finally recorded his first win at Turner Field this season in an abbreviated outing during the Braves' 12-3 win over the Rockies on Wednesday. The Braves' offensive outburst gave Vazquez's arm a welcome reprieve. He threw just 71 pitches on Wednesday after averaging 111 pitches per game over his previous three starts. Vazquez has been stingy with runs of late. Including his five innings with no earned runs against the Rockies, Vazquez has given up two earned runs or fewer in each of his last three starts.

Edgar Renteria returned last Friday from a six-game absence with an injured right hamstring and went 0-for-8 in his first two games back. But he heated up a little bit in Sunday's series finale at Seattle, lining a fifth-inning RBI single.

Giants probable pitcher

Jonathan Sanchez

  • #57 LHP
  • (1-4) 4.74 ERA 37 SO
Sanchez is coming off his best effort of the season, a six-inning two-hitter last Wednesday at San Diego. Both hits, however, generated runs as the Padres prevailed, 2-1. It was Sanchez's third consecutive losing decision but also just his second quality start of the year. Sanchez has struggled against Atlanta, going 0-2 with a 7.04 ERA in three appearances.

Ishikawa wows 'em (23-21) (21-23)

Giants 8, Braves 2

Deflated rally hurts

After Javier Vazquez gave up three runs in the fifth inning, the Braves nearly got him right back in the game by loading the bases to start the sixth. They only pushed across two runs, however, which Vazquez gave back in the bottom of the frame en route to his fourth loss.

First things first

Travis Ishikawa notched a career-best four hits, including the first homer by a Giants first baseman this season, to lead an offensive bonanza that also included Edgar Renteria's two-run double. Justin Miller preserved Jonathan Sanchez's win with two key strikeouts in the sixth.
