Chicago remains scene for Pirates

After a three-game set vs. the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field over the weekend, the Pirates remain in the Windy City for a set vs. the division-rival Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Pirates probable pitcher

Paul Maholm

  • #28 LHP
  • (3-1) 3.30 ERA 32 SO
Usually a model of efficiency, Maholm faced a patient Nationals lineup his last time out, and the left-hander had to throw a lot more early pitches than he is used to. As a result, Maholm had to come out after throwing 114 pitches in only six innings. Still, the outing was the third quality start for the left-hander in his last four outings, even though he is just 0-1 in those starts. Maholm is certainly familiar with the Cubs, having made eight starts against them in his career. In those eight games, he is 4-1 but with a 6.32 ERA.

Cubs happy to head home

Perhaps a return to Wrigley Field and a look at a starting left-hander will help turn around the fortunes of the Chicago Cubs.

Cubs probable pitcher

Ryan Dempster

  • #46 RHP
  • (3-3) 4.40 ERA 49 SO
Dempster ran into a hot pitcher in his last outing, having to face St. Louis' Chris Carpenter. Dempster notched another quality start, his fifth, but came up short. He gave up two runs on six hits over seven innings. He walked two, but both were intentional. He'll be happy to face someone other than St. Louis. Dempster has been unable to beat the Cardinals in three starts this year. He's 2-0 at home so far. Against the Pirates, he's 4-7 in his career.

Freddy's dream a nightmare for Cubs (21-24) (21-22)

Bucs take slugfest

Hoping to keep their division rivals down, the Pirates did just that with an offensive outburst led by Freddy Sanchez. The veteran second baseman collected six hits, scored four runs and tallied three RBIs in the Bucs' second straight win.

Skid hits eight

The Cubs finally seemed to cure their offensive woes, breaking out for seven runs. Milton Bradley led the charge with a two-run double and two-run homer, but the pitching staff was not at its best as the North Siders dropped their eighth straight.
