Harris making impact off bench

Entering Wednesday's action, Willie Harris is hitting .304 with five RBIs in his past 15 games. Harris said that preparation is the reason he has success off the bench.

Nationals probable pitcher

Jordan Zimmermann

  • #27 RHP
  • (2-1) 5.71 ERA 39 SO
Zimmermann's last start was his best one in almost a month. Having allowed 13 first-inning runs in his previous five starts, Zimmermann threw a simulated game in the bullpen before his last start, pretending it was the first inning. The exercise helped, as Zimmermann didn't allow a run in the first inning and proceeded give up just two runs in seven innings. The right-hander struck out seven batters and walked only one.

Mets bullpen rested for finale

The Mets enter Wednesday's series finale armed for the sweep with a rested bullpen. Of course, that rest could be a moot point with ace Johan Santana on the mound.

Mets probable pitcher

Johan Santana

  • #57 LHP
  • (6-2) 1.50 ERA 75 SO
Allowing three runs -- two earned -- to the Red Sox on Friday, Santana won his second consecutive start. He has now served up nine runs over his past two outings and won both of them, after allowing merely eight runs over his first seven starts combined. And his next matchup, at home against the Nationals, is far more favorable than his last one. Santana has already beaten the Nats once this year, and he was 3-0 with a 2.57 ERA against them last season.

Sweep success (13-33) (26-20)

Mets 7, Nationals 4

Tough to swallow

Adam Dunn's torrid tear of homers extended with a two-run shot against the Mets. But it was the home run the slugger watched fly over his head that made the biggest impact, as the umpires reviewed a Daniel Murphy drive and gave the call to the Mets for the difference in the finale.

Walk the line

It was an interesting case of split personalities for Johan Santana, as he showed his usual dominance with 11 K's, but issued six walks -- one with the bases-loaded. The Mets' fourth video replay in five games was the cure, as Daniel Murphy's reviewed home run led to the sweep.
