Galarraga searching for the handle

Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Wednesday that it's tougher for a pitcher to get over a bad outing than it is for a hitter to get past a hitless game. Armando Galarraga wouldn't argue that.

The Tigers and Galarraga continue to work on the issues that turned the team's Pitcher of the Month for April into a pitching mess for May. After going 3-0 in the opening month, he's 0-4 with a 9.92 ERA in his past five starts, having allowed 25 runs on 30 hits over 22 2/3 innings. He was somewhat better in his last outing on Saturday, allowing four Rockies runs on six hits over 5 1/3 innings, but his crushing blow was a Todd Helton solo homer he allowed immediately after the Tigers tied the game.

Just two days ago, Orioles pitcher Jason Berken made his Major League debut and now it'll be another Oriole's turn to step onto the mound and into the spotlight for his first Major League start.

Hernandez will be the second Oriole in less than a week to make his big-league debut when he replaces the injured Koji Uehara. Hernandez struck out 13 batters in his last outing at Triple-A Norfolk and has posted a 3-1 record and a 2.91 ERA through eight starts. Hernandez led the Eastern League in strikeouts last year and currently ranks second in the International League in that category.

Hernandez keeps O's going (26-20) (22-26)

Orioles 5, Tigers 1

Armando progresses

After five forgettable May starts, Armando Galarraga looked more like his early season self, but it wasn't enough for the Tigers to win the series opener against the suddenly streaking O's. Detroit had its chances against a debuting David Hernandez but couldn't get the big hit.

A winning debut

One game before catcher Matt Wieters' Major League debut, pitcher David Hernandez got his call and answered the bell nicely, allowing just one run over 5 2/3 innings. Luke Scott homered twice while driving in four, and Nolan Reimold homered for a third straight day.
