Low-key approach serves Willis well

When left-hander Dontrelle Willis says he wants to keep on keeping on, he's doing more than spouting a cliche approach to extending his early season success.

After many wondered -- with good reason -- whether Willis would ever pitch for the Tigers again going into the season, Willis has laid the foundation to become a potential go-to starter heading into the summer. While his last outing couldn't match his 6 1/3 scoreless innings from his season debut, his quality start -- three runs allowed over 6 2/3 innings -- gave the Tigers at least a chance at a victory, even though Detroit's struggling offense couldn't convert. Willis has allowed 16 hits over his 17 2/3 innings, including only one home run, and he's been hitting the corners of the strike zone with relative consistency.

In mere hours, Matt Wieters will make his highly anticipated debut for the Orioles as they will look to continue their season-high four-game winning streak against the Detroit Tigers.

Orioles probable pitcher

Brad Bergesen

  • #35 RHP
  • (1-2) 5.49 ERA 18 SO
Bergesen had another erratic start in his last outing, holding the Nationals scoreless through four innings and allowing two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. And that trend holds true for the rookie: In his last five starts, Bergesen has allowed 11 total runs in the first five innings and seven in the sixth or later. Bergesen has allowed at least three earned runs in all but one of his outings.

Grand debut goes to O's (26-21) (23-26)

Orioles 7, Tigers 2

Tigers overwhelmed

The Tigers' offense struggled for the second straight night, collecting just five hits off Baltimore starter Brad Bergesen. Dontrelle Willis, meanwhile, had a rough outing, getting knocked around for 10 hits over five frames while putting Detroit in a seven-run hole it couldn't overcome.

Scott stays hot

Matt Wieters went hitless, but his big league debut went well, as the O's overwhelmed the Tigers. Luke Scott hit two homers, including a grand slam. That was plenty for Brad Bergesen, who yielded just seven hits over eight-plus frames for his first win since April 21.
