Keeping the ball in the park had never really been an issue for Chris Volstad. That is, until now. Volstad has surrendered 11 home runs, tied for the fifth most in the NL.

Marlins probable pitcher

Chris Volstad

  • #41 RHP
  • (4-3) 3.69 ERA 51 SO
The 22-year-old started off Florida's six-game road trip with a victory against the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. In that outing, he worked 6 2/3 innings, giving up three runs on six hits. Now he's won two straight decisions, and key in both games has been an improved curveball, to go along with his fastball and changeup. Volstad is a sinkerball pitcher, and his curveball is throw with pretty good velocity. This will be the first time Volstad has faced the Mets since Sept. 26, 2008, when he tossed six scoreless innings in a victory at Shea Stadium. One thing to watch with the Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., native is home runs allowed. He's been taken deep six times in his last four starts.

Well-rested Mets look to take finale

The Mets hope a well-rested lineup will pay dividends in the rubber game of their series with the Marlins on Sunday when John Maine takes the hill.

Mets probable pitcher

John Maine

  • #33 RHP
  • (4-3) 4.18 ERA 36 SO
John Maine had one of his best outings of the season Monday against the Nationals, allowing one run and four hits in six innings while striking out four. Maine is scheduled to next take the mound Sunday against the Marlins, against whom he is 1-0 in two starts thus far this season. Maine has allowed just two earned runs and three hits in 11 innings against Florida this season and owns a 4-1 mark with a 2.49 ERA versus the Marlins in his career. That includes the best start of his career, when Maine struck out 14 Marlins while yielding a single hit in 7 2/3 innings Sept. 29, 2007.

Maine, bats double trouble for Marlins (23-28) (28-21)

Mets 3, Marlins 2

Volstad outpitched

Chris Volstad allowed three runs over seven innings in a quality start, but he was outdueled by the Mets' John Maine as the Marlins dropped the finale. The Marlins pushed across two runs in the eighth, but their rally fell just short.

Mets use the double

John Maine struck out five over six shutout innings before leaving the game with a stomach bug, and the Mets got a trio of RBI doubles from Angel Pagan, Fernando Martinez and Omir Santos to notch the series victory over the Marlins.
