Bradley's injury opens spot for Johnson

Reed Johnson didn't start the opener of the Cubs' road trip. It doesn't look like manager Lou Piniella will have much trouble finding Johnson playing time on the rest of the trip, however.

Cubs probable pitcher

Ted Lilly

  • #30 LHP
  • (6-4) 3.50 ERA 52 SO
Lilly leads the Cubs in wins and quality starts (seven) after beating the Dodgers, 2-1, in his last start. He gave up four runs, including a homer by Matt Kemp that landed in the basket rimming the left-field bleachers. When he pitches seven or more innings, Lilly is 2-2 with a 1.55 ERA in four starts. He will miss Wrigley Field, as four of his six wins have come at home.

Jeff Francoeur took advantage of some time off to work on his swing and regain his timing. It paid off with a clutch home run on Tuesday, and Francoeur hopes his next one won't be so long in the making.

Braves probable pitcher

Derek Lowe

  • #32 RHP
  • (6-3) 3.49 ERA 41 SO
Lowe proved to be his biggest critic after his last start, saying he "pitched poorly" against the Diamondbacks on Thursday at Chase Field. The big right-hander gave up a season-high 10 hits in seven innings in the loss. He was charged with five runs, but only three earned in the hard-luck loss. He still has pitched at least seven innings in four of his last seven starts. He still ranks among the league leaders in wins, innings pitched and games started.

Micah mashes

After Mike Fontenot's two-run double in the fourth, it looked like Ted Lilly was going to out-duel Derek Lowe. But the Braves rallied, and the game went to extras after the Cubs left the bases loaded in the ninth. Then in the 11th, Micah Hoffpauir's pinch-hit gave Chicago the win.

Reversal of fortune

On the night after a dramatic 12-inning win, the Braves rallied to tie another game, but this time, they lost in 11 innings. Derek Lowe held the Cubs to two runs in seven innings, and Chipper Jones had a game-tying pinch-hit, but Jeff Bennett and Eric O'Flaherty struggled in the 11th.
