Randy Johnson's next triumph will make him only the 24th Major Leaguer to reach 300 victories, and he makes his first attempt after seven days' rest thanks to off-days and a rainout in Washington.

Johnson's quest for 300 career wins is back on track. Johnson allowed one run over six innings on Wednesday against the Atlanta Braves and, on his third try, secured his 299th career victory. Johnson struck out Chipper Jones three times and walked none in his 79-pitch effort. The veteran is 0-2 with an 8.50 ERA in four road starts this season. He picked up career win No. 298 against the Nationals on May 11, striking out nine over five innings, while allowing four runs on eight hits.

After being rained out Wednesday night, Giants starter Randy Johnson, 45, has an opportunity to make history. And he'll be doing so against Jordan Zimmermann -- a pitcher almost half his age, with nearly one-hundredth as many victories.

The Nationals' first-round pick in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft made his third Major League start his last time out, and it was a rude awakening for the young lefty. He lasted just four innings against the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park, in which he gave up five runs on 10 hits, including four doubles -- two by leadoff hitter Jimmy Rollins -- and a triple by Pedro Feliz.

Johnson gets 300

After enduring a one-game postponement and a 36-minute rain delay, Randy Johnson got the job done, getting his 300th win on his first attempt. The Giants gave him two runs in the second inning and then held off the Nationals, helped in part by sparkling defense, including Johnson's own.

Series at a Glance

No stopping history

The Nationals got a solid six-inning effort from rookie starter Jordan Zimmermann, who did not allow a runner outside of the second inning, but the two runs he gave up in that frame were enough for Randy Johnson, who became the 24th member of the 300-win club.
