Soriano hoping knee problems in past

The way Alfonso Soriano made a turn at first in Wednesday's game may have broken up some scar tissue in his knee, which may turn out to be a good thing.

Cubs probable pitcher

Ryan Dempster

  • #46 RHP
  • (4-3) 4.48 ERA 57 SO
Dempster has been pitching despite a blister on his right middle finger and says it's not a problem. In fact, he's apparently had it all season but nobody knew until Lou Piniella blurted it out after Dempster's last start Saturday. Dempster has notched six quality starts, and in his last outing against the Dodgers, he held them to three hits while walking one and striking out five.

Extra-inning loss

The Cubs had plenty of chances to score early, but despite not taking advantage of them, solo shots by Geovany Soto and Bobby Scales, coupled with Jake Fox's game-tying sac fly and Ryan Dempster's solid start put them in position to come away with a series win. A fielder's choice in the 11th, however, gave the game away.

Walking off into night

The Reds weren't going down in the 11th. After having been stifled with runners on in the ninth and 10th innings, Adam Rosales knocked home Jay Bruce to help the Reds walk off past the Cubs and prevail in Matt Maloney's stellar big league debut. Ramon Hernandez hit a two-run homer and Chris Dickerson notched an RBI.
