Phillies take aim at Kuroda

It has been more than seven months since the Phillies faced Dodgers right-hander Hiroki Kuroda at Dodger Stadium.

Phillies probable pitcher

Joe Blanton

  • #56 RHP
  • (4-3) 5.86 ERA 53 SO
Blanton is coming off his third straight strong performance -- all wins. He allowed three runs on six hits in seven innings against the Padres in his last start and snapped San Diego's 10-game home winning streak. Two of the three runs came on solo home runs. Blanton has been particularly effective on the road, where he is 3-1 this season and 6-1 in his past 12 starts. Phillies manger Charlie Manuel said that Blanton came to Spring Training in excellent shape and has improved as the season has gone along. Blanton even said: "I feel more comfortable with men on base, and I've got a good slot release now." The Phillies are 16-7 in Blanton's 23 start with Philadelphia.

Kuroda coming up clutch in big games

As evidenced by his 1.46 ERA in two playoff starts last season, Dodgers right-hander Hiroki Kuroda embraces pitching in big games.

Dodgers probable pitcher

Hiroki Kuroda

  • #18 RHP
  • (1-1) 2.53 ERA 8 SO
Kuroda did a nice job during his first start in nearly two months. He pitched five solid innings, allowing two runs after he walked back-to-back batters in his only fit of wildness. He struck out six and showed his normal velocity. As long as Kuroda comes out of it in one piece, the Dodgers should be feeling good about his comeback start going into this one against the Phillies, whom he beat last year in the playoffs.

Deja vu in Dodger Blue: 'Dre wins it (32-22) (39-19)

Dodgers 3, Phillies 2 (12)

Lead slips from Lidge

Brad Lidge allowed a tying homer to pinch-hitter Rafael Furcal in the ninth inning, blowing his sixth save of the season and second in as many days. Matt Stairs' two-run pinch-hit single in the seventh would have made a winner of Joe Blanton, who allowed just one run over six innings.

Ethier strikes again

For the second consecutive game, Andre Ethier delivered a walk-off win for the Dodgers, who now have 12 victories this season in their final at-bat. Ethier's 12th-inning homer was made possible by Rafael Furcal's pinch-hit long ball off Phillies closer Brad Lidge in the ninth.
