Phillies manager Charlie Manuel made it official Friday when he announced left-hander Antonio Bastardo would start Sunday night against the Dodgers. In reality, it was going to be him all along.

Antonio Bastardo

  • (1-0) 1.50 ERA 5 SO
The 23-year-old left-hander made his Major League debut against the Padres on Tuesday, allowing one run on four hits, striking out five, walking one and hitting a batter in six strong innings. His fastball was topping out at 94-95. "I liked the way he pitched," said Phllies manager Charlie Manuel. "He surprised me with his fastball. I saw his slider and changeup in Spring Training and hopefully we'll see them more next time out." Manuel said that Bastardo's slider was coming out like a helicopter propeller with a little sweep to it. Bastardo was gripping his fastball hard at times and that is what made it ride up.

If the Dodgers win their third consecutive game against the Phillies on Sunday, they'll probably do so with the help of one, two or three relievers from what has become a deep bullpen.

Dodgers probable pitcher

Randy Wolf

  • #21 LHP
  • (3-1) 3.21 ERA 58 SO
Wolf has a tendency to start out shaky and that was the case against the D-backs, who loaded the bases in the first and second innings on Tuesday. He escaped by allowing just one run in the first, but Justin Upton slugged a grand slam in the second. Wolf restored order and held Arizona scoreless over the next four innings, giving the bullpen a rest in a game in which the Dodgers rallied to take the lead in the eighth.

Phils leave no doubt in finale win (33-22) (39-20)

Phillies 7, Dodgers 2

Bastardo now 2-0

The Phillies made sure there would be no late-inning letdown this time. Carlos Ruiz and Shane Victorino homered in the seventh inning and Ryan Howard added his 17th of the season in the eighth to help Antonio Bastardo win his second game in as many starts.

Offense cools off

A spotty offensive effort caught up with the Dodgers, whose comeback magic disappeared in the series finale. Matt Kemp hit an RBI single in the fourth inning, but the Dodgers left two men on in the frame and couldn't make a charge to back starter Randy Wolf.
