Jackson faces latest challenge

After Justin Verlander went the distance to outduel John Danks and the Sox on Wednesday, Tigers manager Jim Leyland will have just about his entire bullpen back at or near full strength for Thursday series finale. But the way Edwin Jackson has been pitching, it might not matter.

Tigers probable pitcher

Edwin Jackson

  • #36 RHP
  • (6-3) 2.16 ERA 62 SO
Jackson pitched perhaps his best start of the year Saturday in Detroit, finishing the complete game while giving up only one run. Over his last two starts, he has thrown 17 innings and given up only one run as he continues to hold on to the second-best ERA in the American League, at 2.16. What's more, Jackson continues to eat up innings, throwing eight or more innings in three of his last four starts.

GM Williams not pushing panic button

The uneven, rollercoaster ride of a season for the White Sox suddenly seems to be plunging to new territory. A win Thursday to end the homestand might help delay some decisions GM Ken Williams could be faced with soon.

White Sox probable pitcher

Gavin Floyd

  • #34 RHP
  • (4-5) 5.35 ERA 66 SO
Floyd continued his pitching brilliance of late, producing his fourth consecutive quality start in a 4-2 victory against the Indians. Floyd retired 12 straight batters between the second and sixth innings. He lasted 6 2/3 innings, allowing five hits, two runs (one earned) while striking out seven and walking one. Over his last four games, Floyd owns a 1.82 ERA with 31 strikeouts. In the process he has lowered his ERA from 7.71 to 5.35. Floyd has experienced great success in his career against the Tigers. He is 5-0 with a 3.88 ERA and 43 strikeouts in 10 starts. The 10 starts mark the most against any single opponent for Floyd.

Slipping and sliding to victory (33-27) (28-33)

White Sox 4, Tigers 3

Not so Grand

After nearly a three-hour rain delay, Edwin Jackson got his chance to shine. He may not have been lights-out, but despite being a little wild, he kept the Tigers in the game -- setting up Curtis Granderson's game-tying homer in the ninth. All was for naught, though, as Detroit couldn't hold off Chicago in the bottom of the frame.

Turning the tide

Gavin Floyd came on after an extended rain delay with his best stuff in hand, tossing eight innings of one-run ball. His outing was almost squashed, however, when Bobby Jenks blew a save in the ninth. Luckily, Scott Podsednik came up clutch with a bases-loaded RBI single to help the Sox walk off victorious.
