Johan can lock up series win for Mets

Despite a trio of heartbreaking losses against two rivals, the injury-riddled Mets need only a strong performance from ace Johan Santana to salvage a 3-3 record during a critical six-game stretch.

Mets probable pitcher

Johan Santana

  • #57 LHP
  • (8-3) 2.39 ERA 91 SO
Santana picked up his eighth win of the season despite allowing four home runs, which tied a career high. Santana gave up eight hits and five earned runs in seven-plus innings against the Phillies but contributed the game-tying double in the sixth inning. Lifetime, Santana is 4-1 against the Yankees with a 3.15 ERA in seven career starts. That includes a 3-0 mark and a 2.05 ERA in the Bronx, although those stats may be irrelevant in the new Yankee Stadium. Santana went 1-1 in two starts against the Yankees last season, giving up seven earned runs in 13 2/3 innings.

Yanks' goal of series win within reach

The Yankees have hit a bit of a rough patch recently, but they still have the opportunity to achieve manager Joe Girardi's goal of continuing to win series, as A.J. Burnett pitches the rubber game.

Yankees probable pitcher

A.J. Burnett

  • #34 RHP
  • (4-3) 4.89 ERA 66 SO
Burnett will be trying to rebound from one of the worst starts of his career, lasting only 2 2/3 innings in a 7-0 loss to the Red Sox on Tuesday at Fenway Park. Burnett appeared too strong and unable to command his fastball, walking five and allowing five runs (three earned) in the start. As he makes his Subway Series debut, Burnett has still won two of his last three starts and is 2-6 with a 3.83 ERA in 16 career starts against the Mets, having last faced them in 2005.

Yanks go fourth against Johan (32-29) (36-27)

Yankees 15, Mets 0

Ace chased early

The Mets couldn't score after loading the bases with no outs in the third inning, and that was the only chance for Johan Santana, who allowed a career-high nine runs and was chased with no outs in the fourth. Manager Jerry Manuel was ejected in the sixth, the culmination of a full day of questioned calls.

Big inning sets tone

The Yankees pondered trading for Johan Santana two offseasons ago, but the pitcher they saw on Sunday looked nothing like a two-time AL Cy Young Award winner. Hideki Matsui's homer drove in two of the Yankees' nine fourth-inning runs and took the pressure off A.J. Burnett, who sailed through seven innings.
