The A's hope a four-run eighth inning on Tuesday, which included homers by Jason Giambi and Bobby Crosby, will kick-start an offense that has struggled recently.

Athletics probable pitcher

Trevor Cahill

  • #53 RHP
  • (3-5) 4.17 ERA 34 SO
Cahill, 21, hadn't allowed more than two earned runs in four consecutive starts before he gave up a three-run homer to Minnesota third baseman Joe Crede his last time out. Cahill was otherwise solid against the Twins, allowing just those three runs on seven hits and two walks over seven innings. He left the game trailing, 3-0, but Oakland rallied for three runs in the eighth to take him off the hook for a loss. Cahill, who relies heavily on a sinking two-seam fastball, hasn't issued more than three walks in a start since April 18. He's never faced the Dodgers.

Torre shooting for 25 games over .500

Even though the Dodgers are 21 games above .500 and have a sizable lead in the National League West, Dodgers manager Joe Torre isn't quite satisfied.

A's overcome E's to top Dodgers (28-36) (43-23)

Athletics 5, Dodgers 4

Big bats, shaky 'D'

Rajai Davis and Jack Cust homered in the third inning, helping to give the A's and Trevor Cahill a big enough cushion to overcome three errors -- including a dropped popup -- that led to three unearned runs. Cahill allowed two runs -- both unearned -- over 5 1/3 innings to pick up his fourth victory.

No win for Kuroda

Opening Day starter Hiroki Kuroda remained winless since returning from the DL, allowing five runs in six innings, including two homers in the third. The Dodgers plated three unearned runs thanks to three A's errors, but they also squandered scoring chances in the first and second innings.
