Martin taking better swings at plate

The slumping Russell Martin was a bright spot in the Dodgers' loss on Friday, as he looked a lot more comfortable at bat and was hitting the ball better than he had recently.

  • (3-1) 3.72 ERA 20 SO
Dodgers manager Joe Torre hasn't formally announced his decision, but Weaver is expected to make his first start since May 20 because injured starter Eric Stults will not by ready and Eric Milton isn't eligible to come off the disabled list until Sunday. Coincidentally, Weaver would be scheduled to start against his brother, Jered, on Saturday. It will mark the first time the two brothers have pitched against each other.

With all the talk of Jered and Jeff Weaver dueling each other for the first time on Saturday, nearly lost in the shuffle is the fact that Jered Weaver could become the first of the two brothers to be selected to an All-Star team this year.

  • (7-2) 2.08 ERA 74 SO
Turning up the heat in his bid for his first All-Star Game appearance, Weaver is coming off the first complete-game shutout of his career, a dominant five-hit effort against the Padres at home on Sunday. He walked one man while striking out five. The crossfiring right-hander has yielded just 10 earned runs in his past 89 2/3 innings, yielding one or no runs in six of his past eight starts. Weaver has pitched brilliantly in the past against the Dodgers, going 3-1 with a 1.59 ERA in five starts.

Brothers in arms: Jeff outduels Jered (45-24) (36-30)

Dodgers 6, Angels 4

Big brother wins out

In the Majors' first pitching matchup between brothers since 2002, Jeff Weaver continued his resurrection season by allowing two runs in five-plus innings to down his little brother Jered. Russell Martin hit his first homer of the season in the third and Andre Ethier lashed a two-run triple in the fifth.
