Hot corner offers Greene opporunity

Despite ending the I-70 Series on a downer after getting hit by a pitch, Khalil Greene had a renaissance weekend in Kansas City and may have discovered a new home in the field.

Cardinals probable pitcher

Todd Wellemeyer

  • #37 RHP
  • (6-6) 5.36 ERA 51 SO
Wellemeyer, in dire need of a good showing, got one his last time out. Now the trick is doing it again. It's not like he's been awful all year. He's put together a good start or two here and there throughout the season. What he hasn't been able to do is sustain it. If he can limit the damage in potential big innings like he did against Detroit on Wednesday, that's an excellent first step.

Redding set to state rotation case

With starting pitchers John Maine and Oliver Perez potentially coming off the disabled list in the near future, Tim Redding's hold on a spot in the rotation is tenuous at best.

Mets probable pitcher

Tim Redding

  • #44 RHP
  • (0-2) 6.27 ERA 20 SO
Despite allowing baserunners in every inning and serving up Matt Wieters' first career home run, Redding escaped with a no-decision in 5 1/3 innings last Wednesday in Baltimore. It was the worst outing of the month for a pitcher who had produced a 2.77 ERA in his previous two starts. Redding's next outing comes against the Cardinals, a team that tagged him for six runs in 5 2/3 innings in a start last season. Redding hasn't beaten the Cardinals since 2004.

No Beltran? No problem for Mets (39-32) (35-33)

Mets 6, Cardinals 4

Rally falls short

Coming off a smashing weekend in Kansas City, the Cardinals looked to take advantage of a Mets team that had just lost Carlos Beltran, but Todd Wellemeyer was shaky and though homers by Ryan Ludwick and Brendan Ryan made it close, the visiting team fell short against the New York bullpen.

Murphy, Santos star

The Mets have to find offense from a variety of sources now that Carlos Beltran has joined a large DL contingent. They did that in a series-opening win over the Cardinals, as Omir Santos had a career-high four hits and Dan Murphy went deep. Brian Stokes induced a double play from Albert Pujols in a huge spot in the eighth.
