Piniella wants to rest regulars via DH

With the Cubs in the midst of playing six straight games at AL ballparks, manager Lou Piniella is hoping to take advantage of the DH and provide a breather for some of his stars.

Cubs probable pitcher

Rich Harden

  • #40 RHP
  • (4-3) 5.10 ERA 64 SO
Harden wasn't sharp in his last outing against the Indians. He served up two three-run homers among the seven hits he gave up in five innings. The right-hander said he was falling behind in the count. He also has discovered that he can't get away with any mistakes. "It seems that this year, when I'm leaving the ball up it's cost me," he said. "If you're going to miss, miss in, miss out, but don't miss over the plate. That has to be my approach out there."

With eight wins heading into his start against the Cubs, 20-year-old Rick Porcello can join some elite company if he manages to pick up a victory or two before the All-Star break.

Tigers probable pitcher

Rick Porcello

  • #48 RHP
  • (8-4) 3.54 ERA 41 SO
Porcello allowed three runs -- one earned -- in 5 2/3 innings against the Cardinals on Thursday in St. Louis. He struck out three, walked two and turned a one-run lead over to the Tigers' bullpen, earning his eighth victory in 13 starts. He is 2-1 in four starts in June and has allowed just two earned runs in his last two outings.

Sweet sixcess: Tigers roll on (34-34) (40-31)

Tigers 5, Cubs 3

Cubs can't capitalize

The Cubs went 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position and subsequently lost their third straight. Derrek Lee's hit streak reached 21 games and Geovany Soto hit his sixth homer, but he also dropped a popup that led to two decisive runs, aiding in Rich Harden's third straight loss.

Tigers streaking

Adam Everett's RBI single in a two-run sixth inning put the Tigers up for good, extending the club's win streak to six games. Miguel Cabrera and Gerald Laird lofted solo homers to back Rick Porcello, who settled for a no-decision in his bid for his ninth win after five solid innings.
