There has been some good and some not-so-good, but mostly, Joba Chamberlain wonders how his first full year as a starter has gone so quickly.

Joba Chamberlain

After clashing with catcher Jorge Posada in his previous start, Chamberlain found a better flow with rookie catcher Francisco Cervelli on Thursday, scattering seven hits while walking four and striking out six. He held the Nationals to three runs in six innings, but the Yankees scored none and Chamberlain took the loss in a 3-0 defeat.

Kawakami unafraid of big-time clubs

When the stakes have been high, Braves right-hander Kenshin Kawakami has proven to be a big-game pitcher for Atlanta.

Braves probable pitcher

Kenshin Kawakami

  • #11 RHP
  • (4-6) 4.42 ERA 59 SO
With the opportunity to face the Yankees, Kawakami will once again have the chance to prove he's a big-game pitcher. His finest performance occurred on May 23, when he tossed eight scoreless innings against Roy Halladay and the Blue Jays. Then he produced similar dominance on Friday, when ignored the pressure of facing Daisuke Matsuzaka by limiting the Red Sox to two hits and two earned runs in six innings. In his past nine starts, the 33-year-old right-hander has gone 3-2 with a 3.35 ERA.

Joltin' Joe sparks Yanks (39-32) (34-37)

Yankees 8, Braves 4

Back to life

The sixth-inning ejection of Joe Girardi, who was tossed arguing a pickoff call, sparked the Yanks in a good way. Soon thereafter, the Bombers picked up their first run and hit on Francisco Cervelli's homer and added two more on Alex Rodriguez's single, lifting the offense from that point on while also ending a three-game skid.

Good start, weird end

The way the game started for Atlanta, it had all the makings of a Braves win after Kenshin Kawakami, who left the game after the third when he was struck by a liner, and Kris Medlen were perfect through five. But in the sixth, the game shifted course in favor of the Yankees, who overcame two late Braves rallies.
