Phillies blasting off with abandon

The Phillies have reached 100 homers on a franchise-record-setting pace this season, and they hope to continue blasting away when they face the Rays on Wednesday.

Phillies probable pitcher

Joe Blanton

  • #56 RHP
  • (4-3) 5.28 ERA 67 SO
Blanton faces the Rays for the first time since Game 4 of the World Series. He pitched well in the 10-2 victory, allowing just four hits, two runs, two walks and two home runs and striking out seven. But Blanton also hit a homer against the Rays in one of the most memorable moments in the postseason. Blanton will get to pitch against the Rays again, but he won't get a chance to hit.

Garza vying for some payback vs. Phils

Matt Garza was knocked around a bit during a memorable Game 3 of the 2008 World Series, leaving the starter in search of revenge when he faces the Phillies again on Wednesday.

Rays probable pitcher

Matt Garza

  • #22 RHP
  • (4-5) 3.83 ERA 78 SO
Garza made three mistakes -- all home runs -- in his last start against the Rockies, and it cost him. He went five innings and gave up four runs on five hit with five strikeouts. Garza has failed to pitch past the sixth inning in his last three starts after being the Rays' workhorse during the first two months of the season. He has gone winless since May 16 and in that span is 0-3 with a 4.33 ERA in six starts. Garza's next start will be against the Phillies, and his only start against them came in Game 3 of last year's World Series. He received a no-decision as he threw six innings and gave up four runs, three home runs, six hits and two walks while recording seven strikeouts.

Rematch, Round 2: All Rays (37-32) (38-35)

Rays 7, Phillies 1

All slugged out

One day removed from running away with a victory, the Phillies' offense seemed simply sluggish. After not notching a hit until the fifth inning, Jayson Werth tried to jump-start the bats with a solo shot in the seventh, but it proved not enough as Philadelphia fell. Starter Joe Blanton was solid, allowing just a two-run homer.

Grand Garza

Matt Garza entered the game seeking to avenge the 2008 World Series, and avenge he did, tossing eight innings of one-run ball while notching a rewarding victory. Pat Burrell homered in the second, and Jason Bartlett, who tied a club record by extending his hit streak to 18 games, helped the Rays rally for a five-run eighth.
