With his future likely dependent upon the Phillies' moves around the Trade Deadline, Antonio Bastardo will toe the rubber against the Rays on Thursday looking to keep making his case to stay stronger.

Phillies probable pitcher

Antonio Bastardo

  • #58 LHP
  • (2-2) 5.21 ERA 15 SO
Bastardo pitched a career-best seven innings and tied his career-high with five strikeouts in last Friday's 7-2 loss to the Orioles. The rookie left-hander was effective at times and allowed five hits and four earned runs. He struck out five and walked none, which has to be a good sign. Bastardo threw 108 pitches, 73 for strikes, and really settled down after giving up three runs in the second.

With Scott Kazmir's return upcoming, Andy Sonnanstine is in need of a solid outing Thursday against the Phillies to help hold onto his spot in the Rays' rotation.

Andy Sonnanstine

  • #21 RHP
  • (5-7) 6.60 ERA 43 SO
Sonnanstine has been looking more like the old Andy Sonnanstine lately, and that means the guy who gets ahead in the count and quickly dispatches of opposing hitters. He allowed four runs against the Mets Friday night to take his seventh loss of the season, but save for a three-run homer he allowed, he pitched well through six innings. He is a master of deception, employing an array of pitches that he can throw from all different angles. Sonnanstine has never made a regular-season start against the Phillies, but he was the loser in Game 4 of the World Series against the Phillies. He is 12-9 with a 5.01 ERA in 30 career starts at Tropicana Field.

Resilient Rays send Phils reeling (37-33) (39-35)

Phils' lead evaporates

The night began on a positive note, with Ryan Howard's two-run double highlighting a four-run first, but rookie lefty Antonio Bastardo couldn't make the lead stand, allowing six runs in the first two innings as the Phillies dropped the rubber game.
