CC raring to go in Subway opener

CC Sabathia never harbored much doubt that he would be standing on the mound when the Yankees open the second chapter of this year's Subway Series, even if his team wanted him to take it cautiously.

  • (6-4) 3.71 ERA 70 SO
Though he left last Sundays start with tightness in his left biceps, Sabathia said that he expected to make his next start -- and the Yankees agreed. Because the Yankees had to push A.J. Burnett back a day to accommodate his suspension, Sabathia is scheduled to pitch in Burnetts original Friday slot on regular rest. Assuming he makes it, it will mark his first Subway Series start against the Mets, a team he has faced -- and beaten -- only once in his career.

Looking to avenge a series loss in the first edition of the 2009 Subway Series, the Mets and Mike Pelfrey are geared up to knock the Bronx Bombers down a rung.

Mets probable pitcher

Mike Pelfrey

  • #34 RHP
  • (5-2) 4.74 ERA 34 SO
Pelfrey had an outing similar to his last one in everything but the end result in a 10-6 loss to the Rays on Sunday. Pelfrey again cruised through the early innings before hitting trouble later. Pelfrey allowed five straight hits to start the fifth inning -- four of whom scored. Pelfrey finished the day allowing eight hits and those four runs, striking out four in five innings. It's almost exactly the same line he posted in his only career start against the Yankees, when he gave up four runs and eight hits in five innings during a 15-6 Mets win last June 27.

CC silences Mets

It wasn't 15-0, but the way CC Sabathia was pitching, it might as well have been. Sabathia drove in one of the Yankees' four second-inning runs with a single and cruised from there, holding the Mets without a baserunner until the fifth. Alex Rodriguez's homer, his 564th, moved him past Reggie Jackson on the all-time list.

Gaffes prove costly

Mike Pelfrey contained the Yankees after the second inning on Friday, but it was that frame that did in the Mets, who committed three infield errors that led to four runs and set a troublesome tone. Gary Sheffield opened the bottom of the fifth with a homer, but an ensuing rally against CC Sabathia ended with two strikeouts.
