Gardner thriving when given a chance

With Melky Cabrera struggling, Derek Jeter coughing and Xavier Nady likely out for the season, Brett Gardner has received regular at-bats of late, and he hasn't disappointed. On Saturday night at 7:10 ET, Gardner will likely crack the starting lineup again in a game televised on MLB Network and streaming on iPhones.

Yankees probable pitcher

A.J. Burnett

  • #34 RHP
  • (5-4) 4.24 ERA 82 SO
Though his efforts were ultimately overshadowed by Josh Johnson, the winning pitcher who stymied the Yankees over seven innings last Saturday, Burnett was nearly as effective in Miami. He struck out eight for the third time in four outings, allowing one earned run over 6 1/3 innings. And though the Marlins didn't hit any deep fly balls off Burnett, he can't be disappointed to be making his debut at pitcher-friendly Citi Field. Burnett has already beaten the Mets once this season, shutting them out over seven innings at Yankee Stadium.

Avoiding lapses a key for Mets

Three second-inning errors doomed the Mets in Friday's Subway Series opener at Citi Field, but they can rebound against the Yankees with a win on Saturday night at 7:10 ET, when Tim Redding will get the start in a game televised by MLB Network and available for live streaming on iPhones.

Mets probable pitcher

Tim Redding

  • (1-2) 6.08 ERA 24 SO
Redding pitched into the eighth inning for the first time all season for the Mets in earning his first victory of the season. Redding allowed four runs on five hits in seven-plus frames, striking out four. He was susceptible to the long ball, allowing homers to Ryan Ludwick and Brendan Ryan. Redding has never started against the Yankees. He owns a 2-3 career record with a 8.00 ERA in 16 interleague games, including 13 starts.

Mets no trouble

Two starts after beating Johan Santana with seven shutout innings, A.J. Burnett handled the Mets again, this time allowing one hit -- which came in the sixth inning -- and striking out a season-high 10 batters over seven innings in the Yankees' fourth straight victory.

No end to struggles

Alex Cora's only hit in 22 career at-bats against A.J. Burnett was the closest the Mets came to a highlight on Saturday. Tim Redding battled Burnett for five innings, but the dam burst in a four-run sixth in which Redding allowed his second homer of the night, a three-run shot.
