Boston (47-29) at Baltimore (34-42)

Five days after his much-anticipated return from right shoulder surgery, Red Sox right-hander John Smoltz will take the mound again Tuesday against the Orioles with a lot less fanfare, and that's just the way he likes it.

Red Sox probable pitcher

John Smoltz

  • #29 RHP
  • (0-1) 9.00 ERA 5 SO
Following days of buildup, Smoltz's first Major League start in more than a year -- and his first for any team besides the Atlanta Braves -- turned out to be a disappointment. The right-hander gave up four runs in the first inning en route to a 9-3 Red Sox loss to the Nationals. On the positive side, Smoltz settled down nicely after the rough opening inning. He wound up allowing seven hits and five runs over five innings, throwing 92 pitches. Smoltz has never started a game at Camden Yards, but he did earn saves in both of his career appearances there. Lifetime against the Orioles, he is 1-1 with a 4.37 ERA in six games.

O's manager Dave Trembley can remember a time before John Smoltz was a big leaguer. "He was throwing about 99 [mph], but it was halfway up the backstop every time and he was about 18 or 19. I said, 'That guy's going to pitch in the big leagues.'" More than 20 years and 200 wins later, Trembley's prediction holds true.

Orioles probable pitcher

Rich Hill

  • #51 LHP
  • (3-2) 6.03 ERA 34 SO
Hill has been highly erratic this season and hasn't completed five innings in four of his last six starts, but the Orioles appear committed to this reclamation project. Hill struck out the side on 10 pitches in the first inning of his last start, but then he allowed a pair of two-run home runs in the next two innings. For Hill to be successful, he has to mix his pitches and locate within the strike zone.

O's are comeback kids at Camden Yards (47-30) (35-42)

Orioles 11, Red Sox 10

Tough night for 'pen

The Sox appeared well on their way to victory, holding a nine-run lead in the seventh inning. But Justin Masterson -- in for John Smoltz after a rain delay ended the veteran's outing -- Hideki Okajima and Takashi Saito combined to allow 10 runs in the seventh and eighth innings.

Nine-run deficit erased

Calling what the Orioles did on Tuesday a "rally" is woefully inadequate. Down nine runs in the seventh inning, Baltimore sent 11 men to the plate and came away with five runs. They scored five more in the eighth inning and held on, leading to the biggest comeback in franchise history.
