The Red Sox bullpen will face an unusual task in the finale of their three-game series with the Orioles -- bouncing back from losing a nine-run lead. Josh Beckett starts.

Red Sox probable pitcher

Josh Beckett

  • #19 RHP
  • (9-3) 3.48 ERA 94 SO
The ace will close out this nine-game road trip with the Red Sox with the goal of continuing his recent dominance. Beckett has been nothing short of electric of late. In his last seven starts, the right-hander is 5-1 with a 1.24 ERA. In five of his last seven starts, Beckett did not allow an earned run. This is his last start before All-Star selections and Beckett is looking like a strong candidate to make the team, perhaps even as the starter. Beckett is holding opponents to a .239 average. In eight road starts, he is 5-3 with a 4.03 ERA.

Wednesday's game will be a matchup of arguably the two teams' top starting pitchers, with Brad Bergesen facing Red Sox right-hander Josh Beckett.

Orioles probable pitcher

Brad Bergesen

  • #35 RHP

Bergesen continued to shine in his last outing, throwing six innings and giving up just one earned run while striking out five. It was Bergesen's fifth win of the season and fourth straight win. The Orioles provided him plenty of cushion, scoring 11 runs in the right-hander's most recent win on the mound.

Red Sox 6, Orioles 5 (11)

Payback is sweet

Remember the O's 10-run rally? The Red Sox didn't, because they staged their own thrilling win, tying the game in the ninth on Kevin Youkilis' two-run homer and Rocco Baldelli's two-run single. Julio Lugo's RBI single won it in the 11th, and Jonathan Papelbon converted his 133rd save, the most in Red Sox history.

Stinging defeat

Less than 24 hours after staging a historic comeback, Baltimore could not carry that momentum into the finale. Brad Bergesen was cruising along before he handed it to his bullpen in the ninth. But reliable relievers Jim Johnson and George Sherrill were unable to preserve the victory, and the O's eventually fell in the 11th.
