Rox happy with small ball in small parks

The Rockies have plenty of pop, but manager Jim Tracy likes his team to let the home runs come and focus on hitting the ball to the part of the ballpark, even when the park is a cozy one.

Rockies probable pitcher

Jason Hammel

  • #46 RHP
  • (5-3) 4.21 ERA 51 SO
The Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum played big Friday night, and Hammel took advantage, forcing nine outs in the air. Most of them were off the end of bats. Dodger Stadium plays big usually, but the ball tends to travel during day games, so it remains to be seen if Hammel will use the same approach and if it'll work the same. But everything, it seems, is working for Hammel during a stretch where he is 5-0 with a 3.40 ERA in seven starts.

Dodgers starting catcher Russell Martin didn't start Tuesday night, and he will also sit Wednesday, which, combined with Thursday's off-day, offers a three-day breather for the struggling backstop.

Dodgers probable pitcher

Clayton Kershaw

  • #22 LHP
  • (5-5) 3.70 ERA 83 SO
On Friday against the Seattle Mariners, Kershaw displayed more control over his pitches than in many of his other starts this season. In six innings, Kershaw walked just one batter (tied for his lowest total of the year.) Kershaw rarely got behind batters, and his superb location helped him strike out eight Mariners on the night. Kershaw did give up runs in the fourth and sixth innings, but he never allowed Seattle to mount a prolonged rally. Kershaw is 2-3 with a 7.30 ERA in five career starts against the Rockies.

Furcal gift wraps duel for Dodgers (41-37) (50-29)

Dodgers 1, Rockies 0

Hammel sparkles

On the heels of Jason Marquis' complete-game shutout, Jason Hammel did his best to emulate that performance, not allowing a hit through 4 1/3 innings en route to tossing eight innings of one-run ball. His supporting cast in the matinee wasn't quite as strong, however, offering no run support as the Rockies fell in the finale.

Furcal the hero

Wednesday featured a rubber match of all rubber matches, but when the dust settled, Rafael Furcal had rewarded Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers' staff -- which combined to toss nine shutout innings -- with his pinch-hit RBI single in the eighth to send Los Angeles past Colorado in a hotly contested finale duel.
