The Mariners acquired Langerhans from the Nationals in exchange for infielder Mike Morse, and he joined his new team for the three-game series the Yankees, which continues Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium.

Jarrod Washburn

  • #56 LHP
  • (4-5) 3.22 ERA 60 SO
Washburn finally got back into the win column in his last start, against the Padres, again providing six solid innings while allowing just two runs in a 9-3 Mariners win. The outing snapped a 12-game winless streak for the left-hander, who had pitched well enough to win in most of those starts. His ERA now sits at 3.22, though he went a little more than two months between victories. Washburn is 5-5 with a 2.56 ERA lifetime against the Yankees.

The clear standout of the Yanks' bullpen resurgence has been Phil Hughes, taking to his new assignment so well that some are wondering if he might become the primary eight-inning setup man.

Yankees probable pitcher

Andy Pettitte

  • #46 LHP
  • (7-3) 4.38 ERA 61 SO
Pettitte followed arguably his best start of the season with likely his worst. The left-hander squandered an 8-1 lead and exited after just 3 2/3 innings, having surrendered six runs (three earned). Though New York won the game, 11-7, Pettitte let the Braves back in the game and was disgusted with himself afterward. Manager Joe Girardi said Pettitte lost his command in the fourth inning.

Third homer costly

Ken Griffey Jr.'s homer in the sixth not only tied Wednesday's game -- it made the new Yankee Stadium the 44th park in which the future Hall of Famer has gone deep. It proved moot, though, when Jarrod Washburn allowed his third home run of the night, a two-run shot by Alex Rodriguez that put it away.

Streak up to seven

With his fourth homer in six games, Alex Rodriguez broke a sixth-inning tie and sent the Yankees on their way to a seventh straight win. Solo homers by Johnny Damon and Melky Cabrera -- whose towering shot to left was reviewed but upheld -- also helped make a winner of Andy Pettitte.
