Brewers head back to Wrigley Field

The Brewers will return to Wrigley Field on Thursday for the first time since last September. This time, the circumstances are considerably more pleasant.

Brewers probable pitcher

Seth McClung

  • #73 RHP
  • (3-1) 3.55 ERA 30 SO
McClung gave up three runs on six hits in four innings on Saturday against the Giants, his first start of the season. McClung struggled in the second inning, as the first four Giant batters knocked out a hit. He escaped the inning by giving up just two runs, getting the next three batters out. McClung threw 77 pitches on the night. Looking ahead, McClung has made 10 appearances against the Cubs, all in relief. He is 1-0 with a 2.55 ERA in 17 2/3 innings of work.

Despite dealing with injuries, the Cubs hope to start a successful run when they play the Brewers on Thursday in the opener of a series at Wrigley Field.

Cubs probable pitcher

Ryan Dempster

  • #46 RHP
  • (4-5) 4.09 ERA 80 SO
Dempster was rusty in his first outing in 3 1/2 weeks. He had been sidelined with a broken right big toe, suffered July 5, and was going to be limited to 80-85 pitches. He threw 85 exact. But that was over five innings. He gave up six runs on nine hits and struck out three. He just wasn't sharp, and the problem was location. He has one win in his last seven starts.

Homer-friendly Confines (42-37) (38-38)

Cubs 9, Brewers 5

McClung clouted

The wind wasn't working in Seth McClung's favor, as three home runs knocked him from the game with one out in the fourth, and a grand slam followed off reliever Chris Smith. The Brewers responded with homers from Mike Cameron and Prince Fielder, but they weren't enough.

Lee-der of the pack

Derrek Lee drove in a career-high seven runs on a three-run homer in the first inning and a grand slam in the fourth. Jake Fox and Geovany Soto also had solo shots. Starter Ryan Dempster tied his season high with nine strikeouts, allowing four runs over 6 2/3 innings.
